3 'WHY'

1.Why choosing waste separation as the theme of our project?

  • Global environmental degradation: air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, etc. status is quite serious

  • Waste emissions have a huge negative impact on the environment: According to the data given by CAUES (China Association of Urban Environment Sanitation), 1 billion tons of waste are produced every year, which puts a huge strain on the environment.

  • The Chinese government has promoted a policy of  waste separation in recent years:

     - China officially begins separating waste in July

       2019, starting from Shanghai.

     - On 1/12/2019, the nationally unified document related

to waste separation, The Classification Signs for

Municipal Solid Waste, comes into effect.

  • Chinese people's awareness and knowledge of waste separation is insufficient.

  • Market gaps offer opportunities: few and low quality relevant products.

2.Why choosing schools as the target application environment?

  • A high degree of management and personnel compliance, easy to promote in the initial stage.

  • Easy to segment user groups: high degree of commonality within a group, significant variation between groups.

  • Smart bins are expensive to purchase and maintain: more acceptable for organisations than for individuals.

3.Why choosing Platform + Smart Bin instead of one of them?

  • Increase users’ willingness to use the platform.

  • Users can gain a comprehensive understanding of waste separation from both theoretical and practical perspectives.

  • The combination can achieve a more ideal result.

3 'HOW'

1.How do our products reach environmental protection purposes through digital and intelligent means ?

  •  Integrate a large amount of digital information such as news and articles onto a platform, which allows users to access all kinds of waste-separation-related information rapidly and efficiently, instead of spending time searching and filtering on various websites. This helps to increase the willingness of people to read environmentally relevant information.

  •  Use quiz, mini-game and other time-consuming as well as fun activities to encourage users to use their fragmented time to acquire environmental knowledge without any burden. Offering online help or competing with each other will motivate users to take the initiative to learn about environmental protection, which tends to have a subtle impact on developing the right attitude towards environmental protection.

  •  A community section will be set up to provide a space for users to showcase, communicate and share their environmental knowledge, which is likely to encourage them to participate in discussions about waste separation more actively. An influential environmental community is a powerful motivator for people to take an interest in environmental issues.

  •  Combining virtual environmental activities with real public benefits. Virtual contributions made by users on digital platforms will be converted into actual, quantifiable environmental actions, which will make users feel engaged and inspire them to continuously take the social responsibility of environmental protection. At the same time, the environmental activities carried out by the implementers also contribute a lot.

  •  Motivate users to participate in waste separation activities through digital rewards with timely feedback and a high degree of visualisation.

  •  When people drop rubbish into the smart bin, the electronic screen will show users whether their waste has been sorted correctly and some tips related to the waste being disposed of, which will help to understand the categories of waste in a more efficient way so that users can participate in the environmental protection in a right way.

2.Why choosing Platform + Smart Bin instead of one of them?

  •  Increase users’ willingness to use the platform.

  •  Users can gain a comprehensive understanding of waste separation from both theoretical and practical perspectives.

  •  The combination can achieve a more ideal result.

3.How did we create a more accessible and user-friendly interfaces?

Platform:

  • The page font size, image specifications, colours, etc. are carefully adjusted to achieve the best visual performance.

  • Both keyboard input and voice input are set up for each search bar and information posting area, and the page-read function is also available on specific pages to meet the needs of users of different age groups and literacy levels.

  • We have used as many icons as possible for indication in order to make it easier for people with low literacy levels to understand and use. In terms of the choice of icons, we have specifically chosen generic icons or graphics that are consistent with real-life items to make it convenient for some users to guess the content of the section through their daily life experience.

Smart Bin:

  • Bins of different sizes are designed to make the height as friendly as possible for each user.

  • The user-oriented design of our smart bin is not much different from the normal bin and there are clear instructions that are easy to follow, which means that users do not have to spend much time on learning how to use a new bin.

  • There are clear indicators of correctness for users to identify whether their waste has been correctly separated. Taking the group of red-green blind people into account, we have placed image labels (✓✕) next to the indicators.

  • Electronic screens are installed on the bins to facilitate interaction with the user.

  • There is a map showing the location of nearby bins on the App, making it convenient for users to find the nearest bin to dispose of their waste.
