Heuristic Evaluation
-Evaluated during the Mid-fidelity phase
1. Visibility of system status
-
Conform Parts:
➢ The system will give instant feedback such as lighting up, changing colours, ticking boxes, etc. when
the user performs an action.
➢ Users can check the number of Beans, ranking of classes and other information at any time on the
platform or on the screen of the smart bin.
➢ Automatic fault warnings will be sent to the management team when there is any problem with the
smart bin.
-
Potential Issues -- Solutions:
➢ The administrator has insufficient control over the smart bin system.
-- Infrared sensors are installed at specific locations inside the bin and the system will
automatically send cleaning reminders to the administrator when the rubbish in the bin reaches a
specified amount.
2. Match between system and the real world
-
Conform Parts:
➢ The classification of waste follows national standards.
➢ The icons used are either generic or match the actual objects.
➢ The text in the system is based on words and phrases that are commonly used in the real world.
➢ The design logic is universal.
➢ Virtual activities in the charity section will be converted into real-world public benefit activities.
-
Potential Issues:
➢ None
3. User control and freedom
-
Conform Parts:
➢ Back button supports the user to go back only to the previous step in case of an error.
➢ The Delete button is set on the Keyboard.
➢ Log out button on the screen of the bin allows users to exit the system at any time.
-
Potential Issues:
➢ The operation is one-way without any support for undo.
4. Consistency and standards
-
Conform Parts:
➢ Shared database between the platform and smart bins.
➢ All products use the same waste classification standard, ranking criteria and reward rules.
➢ Unified designation of the same item; consistent icons for all versions of the platform and smart
bins.
➢ The logic of the App is similar to that of other applications, and the using method of the Smart Bin
is almost the same as that of the regular bin.
-
Potential Issues:
➢ None
5. Error prevention
-
Conform Parts:
➢ Clean pages to prevent accidental touches.
➢ Using selections instead of manual input as far as possible.
➢ Well designed button sizes and gaps.
-
Potential Issues:
➢ None
6. Recognition rather than recall
-
Conform Parts:
➢ The options selected at the previous step will still be displayed on the next page.
➢ Instructions are given throughout the user's waste disposal process and there is no need to recall.
-
Potential Issues:
➢ None
7. Flexibility and efficiency of use
-
Conform Parts:
➢ Clear and logical multi-level menu.
➢ A “More Information" hyperlink button is available for those who want to find out more, but
experienced users are allowed to skip it.
➢ The NEXT button is used to speed up the process for those who are familiar with the product.
-
Potential Issues -- Solutions:
➢ Primary and secondary school students who do not have easy access to their mobile phones are
prevented from scanning code
-- Multiple identification methods such as scanning code, swiping card and entering code are provided.
8. Aesthetic and minimalist design
-
Conform Parts:
➢ Clean and tidy pages with no unnecessary information or unattractive advertisements.
➢ Nice colour coordination and intuitive icons give the user a good visual experience.
➢ Key content or sections are highlighted through colour contrast.
-
Potential Issues:
➢ Some details still need to be adjusted for the best effect.
9. Help users recongnize, diagnose and recover from errors
-
Conform Parts:
➢ Clear and understandable reminders are provided when a user's account information or code is
entered incorrectly.
➢ When searching for a waste separation category, users may have different descriptions of the same
waste and sometimes it is likely to be impossible to get the exact answer. Taking this into account,
we allow users to correct the mistake by editing their original action, without having to do all the
actions again, or reducing the work involved in correcting the error.
➢ There are indicators to remind users when they have misclassified rubbish, and at the same time
the display shows knowledge or tips relevant to the disposed waste.
➢ Various types of reports are available to help users systematically understand the mistakes they
have made.
-
Potential Issues:
➢ None
10. Help and documentation
-
Conform Parts:
➢ Help & Contact button is set in the Feedback section.
➢ A variety of help forms are available for meeting the needs of different user groups, including
online Q&A, Email, Calling, etc.
-
Potential Issues -- Solutions:
➢ Inconsistent problem descriptions made it difficult for the back office to process them in
categories -- Use selections to replace manual input.
